The notion of being surrounded by walls brings with it something familiar, yet unexplored; a blank canvas that measures the self, a context or even a contextualisation of a space, a structure that refers to itself.
projects | at fifteen is pleased to announce its new exhibition Dressing the Wall. This three-person exhibition will feature the works of Israeli born artists Noa Glazer, Ofra Lapid and Noa Schwartz. The exhibition will focus on the role of the wall in their different practices and will examine each of the artists and their individual interactions and confrontations with the subject.
Instead of approaching the wall as a vacant plaster backdrop, Tel Aviv based artist Noa Glazer, suggests that the wall have an active role in her work. The wall carries the work caressing it, whereby wall and work become intertwined and dependent on one another, metamorphosing it into a body, a place holder, container and vessel.
Deeply influence by the interiors of Adolf Loos, New York based artist Ofra Lapid regards architecture as a form of covering, whereas structure plays a secondary role and is there to hold the covering in place. If we are to approach the wall as a body and the work of art as garment, then the role of the artist is to create this garment and dress the wall.
In the work of Tel Aviv based artist Noa Schwartz, examining placement and matter lay at the forefront of her practice. Approaching the wall as a means of display, as well as natural habitat and materiality of her work, she is interested in returning or placing works of art within its proximity, questioning the origin of their position and form.
By bringing together the work of these three female artists we are encouraged to reexamine the role and more importantly the presence of the wall, not only its impact spatially, but its necessity as a form in its own right and its structure as support.
Dressing the Wall will be on view from the 28th February until the 30th March, 2019 at Dizengoff 209. The space will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 11:00 until 16:00 and Friday and Saturday from 12:00 until 14:30 and outside of these times by appointment only.
